Colchagua Valley

Colchagua Valley, Santiago, O'Higgins

Home to almost two dozen vineyards—including Casa Silva and MontGras, producers of award-winning reds such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and carménère—the Colchagua Valley is one of the most prolific and emblematic wine regions in Chile. With a climate and landscape as appealing as its wine, the valley is a popular side trip for Santiago-based travelers.

The Basics

Lots of sunshine, loamy soil, and a dry climate make for ideal wine-growing conditions. The Colchagua Valley has all three, so visiting the region’s vineyards is essential if you want insight into Chile’s wine heritage. To make the most of your time (without worrying about having to drive), join a small-group day tour with hotel pickup and drop-off included. Or opt for a more comprehensive, multi-day tour. Some tours include lunch and, of course, wine-tasting.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Colchagua Valley is a must-visit for wine connoisseurs.

  • The uneven ground and steep hills at some vineyards may be challenging for travelers with mobility issues.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as some vineyards require lots of walking.

How to Get There

You can get to the Colchagua Valley from Santiago in a few hours, by car or public transit. Buses travel between Santiago and Santa Cruz throughout the day. To save time, or if you don’t speak Spanish, consider joining a tour that includes round-trip transport.

When to Get There

The Colchagua Valley is accessible year-round, and the views are best on cloudless days. For the warmest weather, head to the vineyards between October and May (with December through February being the hottest months). If you’re there in March, don’t miss the Colchagua Valley Grape Harvest Festival.

Best Vineyards in the Colchagua Valley

There’s no shortage of vineyards in the Colchagua Valley, and many are accessible on a day-trip from nearby Santiago or as part of a hassle-free tour. Admire the sweeping views from the observatory or cable car at the Santa Cruz Vineyard. Vik Wine Vineyard combines wine-tasting with contemporary art. And Casa Silva is an award-winner with one of the oldest wine cellars in the Colchagua Valley.
