The Basics

While there are many tours which combine a visit to the Lagunas de Montebello National Park with the Chiflón Waterfall, few stop at Comitán. As such, most travelers interested in visiting this colonial town make their own way there from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, San Cristóbal de las Casas, or neighboring Guatemala. In town, be sure to spend an evening in the plaza, which comes alive with musicians and performers at the weekend.

Things to Know Before You Go

• It’s a good idea to carry change and small bills when traveling in Mexico, as cards aren’t always accepted.

• Be sure to sample traditional Chiapan fare such as tascalate (a sweetened corn- and cacao-based drink) or tamales with chipilín (a plant found in southern Mexico).

• The temperature in Comitán is generally cool and comfortable; pack layers and a light jacket.

• Comitán may not be entirely accessible for wheelchair users, due to raised sidewalks, narrow streets, and colonial buildings.

How to Get There

Comitán is situated close to the border with Guatemala, some 93 miles (150 kilometers) from the state capital Tuxtla Gutiérrez and 58 miles (93 kilometers) from San Cristóbal de las Casas. The easiest way to get there is by private vehicle, although the roads in Chiapas can be tricky to navigate. It can be a good idea to hire a local driver.

When to Get There

Comitán is a pleasant year-round destination, although it sees the arrival of the rainy season between roughly July and October, much like the rest of Chiapas. Typically, Comitán is warm and dry though. Weekends tend to be busiest in the town, as local visitors flock to Comitán for a few days; these are also the liveliest and most interesting times to visit the otherwise sleepy town.

Can Tourists Cross to Guatemala from Comitán?

In short, yes. Land crossings between Chiapas and Guatemala are common along the length of the border, but some of the closest official crossing points to Comitán are located in Ciudad Cuauhtémoc and Carmen Xhán. You can cross there on foot or by car, but you’ll require all the necessary paperwork, including visas (if applicable) and passports.
