Constitution Dock

1 Franklin Wharf, Hobart, Tasmania, 7000

Used by fishing boats and private yachts alike, Constitution Dock is best known as the finishing point for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, which takes place in the week leading up to New Year’s. However, it's a vibrant spot to visit throughout the year, offering good photo opportunities and lots of great spots to grab seafood.

The basics

Constitution Dock is a well-known locale in Hobart, and many people come to see the boats and fishers that dominate the area. Quite a few tours of the city, and of Tasmania, include a stop here to get out and explore. Local hop-on, hop-off bus tours also stop near the dock, and it's a great place to spend a bit of time before visiting nearby attractions such as Salamanca Square and Parliament House.

Things to know before you go

  • Photographers won’t want to miss the chance to photograph the boats and fishers at the dock.

  • Constitution Dock is an inviting place for a stroll, particularly during the summertime.

  • Expect crowds if you visit around New Year’s Eve, when the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is taking place.

How to get there

Constitution Dock is situated on Sullivan's Cove, about a 5-minute walk from the center of Hobart, and just next to the Victoria Dock. The area is well-connected to the rest of Hobart by public transportation, and there are bus stops nearby at Franklin Square and at the corner of Campbell Street and Macquarie Street.

When to get there

You can visit Constitution Dock whenever you want, but you'll find it at its most lively on Saturdays, when there's a market at Salamanca Place nearby. Other popular times to stop by include around New Year's Eve, when Constitution Dock serves as the finishing area for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

Visiting the Salamanca Market

Every Saturday, Hobart's Salamanca Place fills with vendors selling everything from locally made crafts to food, under the umbrella of the Salamanca Market. This market, among the biggest in Australia, is an excellent place to stock up on local produce, gourmet foods, and handicrafts, with the bonus of live music performances.
