Gorgeous Contadora Island (Isla Contadora), close to the capital, was once the seat of the Spanish pearl industry in the surrounding archipelago. Today, the Counting House Island, as it’s called, is home to elegant mansions, upscale shopping and dining options, and a wealth of outdoor adventure opportunities both in the water and on land.
The Basics
A popular escape for moneyed visitors from the mainland, Contadora Island also makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Pearl Islands. Water sports are big business on the island, with adventure travelers coming from around the globe for the spectacular beaches and equally impressive snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, and whale watching. While it’s possible to snorkel off some of the island’s beaches, it’s a better idea to head out on an excursion to nearby islands such as Chapera and Mogo Mogo, where colorful reefs teem with marine life.

How to Get There
The island of Contadora is located at the northern tip of the Pearl Islands, close to the capital. While it's certainly possible to book a boat, it's cheaper and easier to go by plane; several flights leave Panama City daily and take about 20 minutes.
When to Get There
Weather on the island remains warm throughout the year. If you plan to do much snorkeling or diving, keep in mind that high winds can decrease visibility between December and April.
Beaches of Contadora
If you’re visiting the Pearl Islands, chances are you’re planning to spend some time at the beach. There are seven of them to choose from on Contadora, ranging from the sprawling and often empty Playa Caracol to tiny Playa Ejecutiva. Tourist resorts line Playa Larga, the most popular stretch of sand.
