Conwy Mountain (Mynydd y Dref)

Conwy, Wales

Conwy Mountain (Mynydd y Dref), located to the west of Conwy in North Wales, sits in the foothills of the Carneddau range of mountains, overlooking Conwy Bay. The mountain is home to wild Carneddau ponies and roaming sheep, adding to the splendor of this part of the Welsh countryside. With its natural beauty, the area serves as a popular spot for hiking, running, and walking.

The basics

Hike up to the top of Conwy Mountain by following a trail that starts in town, near the train station. At the summit, you’ll find an Iron Age hillfort called Castell Caer Seion, along with spectacular views. Though the route is considered suitable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels, there are steep sections that you may need to use your hands to climb. The descent can be muddy, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. After your walk, stop by one of the many spots in Conwy for some refreshments.

Things to know before you go

  • Dogs must be on a leash, as there are free-roaming sheep in the area.

  • The hike is considered moderately challenging and takes about 2-3 hours to complete.

  • The route to Conwy Mountain forms part of the Cambrian Way, a 298-mile (479-kilometer) walking path from Cardiff Castle to Conwy Castle.

How to get there

The Conwy Mountain circular walk starts by the sea in Conwy, near the intersection of Rose Hill Street and Rosemary Lane by the train station. You’ll walk along the marina before reaching the base of the mountain. The closest parking is found along Mountain Road on the west side of A547 across from Bodlondeb Park.

When to get there

The Conwy Mountain trail is open year-round. In the late summer, the mountainside turns purple thanks to the bell heather plant, making it a popular time to visit. From January to mid-summer, gorse blooms with yellow flowers, while the bilberry plants bear small, sweet blue fruits and the rowan trees stand out with scarlet berries in the summer. The months between April and September typically offer the best chance for good weather.

Things to do in Conwy

In addition to its natural scenery, Conwy also boasts plenty of historical and cultural sites including Conwy Castle. Here, you can climb up one of the towers for scenic views of the town. The Quay House, a skinny red-painted building—known as Britain’s smallest house—is a must-see. On the flip side, Plas Mawr is a grand Elizabethan townhouse with 17 impressive rooms that you can explore.
