POINT OF INTEREST

Cotahuasi Canyon

Arequipa, Peru

Among the world's deepest canyons, the Cotahuasi Canyon is famed for its rugged landscape, which features mountains, deep gorges and gushing waterfalls. While its natural sights are spectacular, it also attracts visitors for its local culture and history, and offers a less-trafficked alternative to the ever-popular Colca Canyon.

The basics

Aside from the landscape, highlights of a visit to the Cotahuasi Canyon include the chance to explore archeological remains, soak in geothermal hot springs, check out ancient terraced farms, and learn all about indigenous plants. Tours are a popular way to explore the canyon, offering the benefit of round-trip transportation and the knowledge of a guide to navigate the often difficult terrain. Many tours also stop in towns such as Taurisma and Quechualla, where you can learn about local cultures. Tours to the canyon from Arequipa typically last three or four days, while some longer tours departing from Lima also visit the canyon.

Things to know before you go

  • Make sure you pack comfortable shoes, sun protection, plus a swimsuit and towel if you plan to soak in hot springs.
  • Tours to the canyon are not typically suitable for wheelchair users and usually involve spending quite a bit of time on your feet.
  • While most treks here are not considered difficult, moderate fitness is recommended.

How to get there

Arequipa is the closest major city to the Cotahuasi Canyon, but it's a good 7-8 hours by car. While you can rent a vehicle and drive yourself, the route features rugged terrain and a 4WD is recommended. Many tours include the convenience of round-trip transportation, plus you can see the canyon's highlights with a guide to navigate. Alternatively, there are buses from Arequipa to Cotahuasi- Reyna.

When to get there

If good weather is your primary concern, then the best time of year to visit the Cotahuasi Canyon is between May and September, when the climate is driest and most pleasant. However, this is also the busiest time for tourism, particularly between June and August, so expect crowds.

Visiting the Colca Canyon (Canon del Colca)

If you’re short on time or want to do a lot of trekking, consider a trip to the more popular Colca Canyon (Canon del Colca), about a 3-hour drive from Arequipa, instead. Popular activities in the canyon range from river rafting to birdwatching, and many people come here specifically to see Andean condors—one of the world’s largest flying birds—in flight.
