POINT OF INTEREST

Cote d’Azur Observatory (Observatoire de la Cote d’Azur)

96 Blvd. de l’Observatoire, Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, 06300

Perched above Nice like a grand temple is the Côte d’Azur Observatory. It’s somewhat awkward to reach, but those who do are rewarded with sights like the huge refractor telescope that’s sheltered by a Gustave Eiffel–designed cupola. While clearly a treat for astronomy lovers, the observatory is also enticing for its views, which sweep from Mont Gros to the Med.

The basics

As the Côte d’Azur Observatory is off the main tourist track in Nice, it’s not included on many sightseeing itineraries or day trips. However, if astronomy is your thing, it’s worth booking a tour directly with the observatory. French-language tours can be booked online, but English-language tours require more organization: These are only available during vacation times, and must be arranged in advance via email with the observatory.

For those just wanting to see the observatory from the outside, a trip up Mont Gros is perfectly pleasant, and it’s a great place for panoramic photos that many travelers miss.

Things to know before you go

  • Guided tours of the Côte d’Azur Observatory last between 90 minutes and 2 hours. For a visit using public transportation, set aside a good half day.

  • The observatory appeals to science and history lovers, as well as those seeking out cool Nice views. Teenagers are likely to enjoy a visit more than younger kids.

  • If you don’t manage to book an English-speaking tour, a good command of French is needed to understand technical explanations and discussions about astronomy.

  • The observatory is on a hill with gravel paths and steps. Visitors with reduced mobility should contact the site directly for access advice.

How to get there

The Côte d’Azur Observatory is perched on Mont Gros, a hill just behind Nice. Parking is limited, but the site can be reached easily by public transit. The simplest way is to go from the Nice-Riquier Station, taking a 10-minute ride on the #84 bus to the Observatoire stop, which is right outside the building.

When to get there

The site is open to the public throughout the year for guided tours only. English-speaking tours only run during the vacation months and must be booked in advance. Occasionally, through the year, there are special openings for events like night visits, family visits, or even storytelling visits; contact the observatory directly to find out about dates and availability.

Landmark telescopes

The first thing to catch your eye at the Côte d’Azur Observatory is the huge rotating dome (estimated to be around 92 tons or 83 metric tonnes), which crowns the building. It was once the home of the world’s largest astronomical telescope, and though it’s now been surpassed in size, it remains impressive to see. Another curious sight that’s often shown on tours is the observatory’s equatorial curved telescope.
