The basics

Crummock Water is not exactly off the beaten path, although it is less visited than neighboring Buttermere Lake, making it an appealing option for those who want a quieter walking or swimming spot. If you’re tight on time, visit the lake as part of a guided highlights tour of the Lake District; day tours typically include a photo stop at Crummock Water and at other regional highlights such as Rydal Water, the village of Grasmere, and Castlerigg Stone Circle.

For travelers with more time to spare, there are plenty of ways to fill it at Crummock Water. Visit Rannerdale Knotts, the supposed site of a battle between the English and the Normans; take a walk along the lakeshore path, which runs along the western lake edge; or go for a swim—the shingle beach at the north shore near Lanthwaite Wood s a popular spot.

Things to know before you go

• Motor boats are not allowed on Crummock Water.
• The lake can be cold so you may want to wear a wetsuit for swimming.
• Scenic rest and picnic spots can be found along the lake’s edge.
• The lake is dog-friendly but they must be kept under close control.

How to get there

The best way to get here is by car or organized tour. From the A66, branch off to the B5292, followed by the B5289. Parking can be found at Scale Hill Bridge and Lanthwaite Wood. Trails from both parking areas lead to the northern shore of the lake. Alternatively, park in Buttermere village and make the 15-minute walk to the southern shore of the lake.

When to get there

Crummock Water is situated in the Buttermere Valley. This area welcomes its highest number of visitors in July and August, so if you want a quieter experience, come in May or late September instead. Plan your trip for April or May to see Rannerdale Knotts covered in a carpet of bluebells.

Walking at Crummock Water

Walking options abound at Crummock Water. For a short stroll with rewarding views, follow the path from Lanthwaite Wood parking lot, which cuts through the woods to the north shore of the lake. A more ambitious route is the 9-mile (14.5-kilometer) loop around the lake’s edge, during which you’ll encounter boggy, steep, and rocky terrain. Although most of this route is off-road, part of it requires you to walk along the B5289 road. If you park in Buttermere, you can follow a trail up to the nearby Scale Force, a 170-foot (51.8-meter) waterfall tucked away in a narrow gorge.
