POINT OF INTEREST

Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum

Vodné dielo Slovensko, Bratislava-Čunovo, Slovakia, 85110

Sitting on a spit of land that stretches into the Danube River, the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum houses an array of contemporary and modern art. Located outside Bratislava, the impressive building is designed to look like a Roman galley that almost floats above the water’s surface. Colorful and striking sculptures are scattered throughout its grounds.

The basics

As the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum is well outside of Bratislava center, to the city’s southeast, it’s not an attraction that most visitors will naturally come across. There’s no stumbling upon it or combining it with other local sites, beyond maybe the bike paths that follow the Danube’s right bank. Families will find this a great sport for children, thanks to the extensive sculpture park, which also has a playground within.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum has an on-site cafe—there are no other coffee or dining options in the area around it.

  • There is a nearby ferry service designed for bicycle transport to the far bank of the Danube, but note that it runs on a seasonal schedule.

  • There is parking available for visitors by the museum entrance.

  • Expect to spend 2-3 hours exploring the museum inside and out.

How to get there

The Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum is located downstream of Bratislava on the Danube, just shy of the Hungarian border. Bus #90 travels from the stop outside the Slovak National Theater directly to the museum. Alternatively you can hire a bike to ride along riverside bike paths, or drive there in roughly 20 minutes.

When to get there

The Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays), from 10am to 6pm. Since the sculpture park is outside, plan to visit on a day with pleasant weather if possible. It’s best to check ahead for the current and upcoming exhibitions if there’s something specific you’re hoping to see.

Places to visit on the Danube near Bratislava

The Danube is a defining feature of Bratislava’s cityscape and is where you’ll find many attractions. To the west, you can see the medieval remains of Devin Castle overlooking the river; in the center there’s the UFO Bridge, featuring a bizarre flying saucer-like observation deck on top.
