Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery
Aberfeldy, Scotland
Open since 1898, Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery is home to the Dewar’s brand and the only distillery built by its namesake family. Located on the banks of the River Tay in the Perthshire countryside, it hosts tours, tastings, and experiences, and also has a visitor center, heritage museum, lounge, bar, café, and gift shop.
The basics
Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery offers a variety of tours and experiences, most of which last from 1-2 hours. Standard tours cover the distillery, warehouse and blending experience, plus feature a tutored sensory tasting of the single malt and a blended scotch. There are a number of more extensive tours, including a blender’s experience, where you can create your own blend to bottle and take home. You can also learn more about the distillery in the heritage museum, enjoy different whiskies in the bar, grab a snack in the café, or purchase bottles and other items in the gift shop.
While it’s possible to visit the distillery independently, guided tours are available and avoid the hassle of having to assign a designated driver. Tours can combine visits to other distillers or highland attractions and often include transfers from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, St. Andrews, or other major cities.
Things to know before you go
Visitors should wear sensible footwear, avoiding open-toed shoes or high heels for the tours.
Children under 18 are welcome on the distillery tours, but must be accompanied by an adult and can’t sample any whisky.
Designated drivers and cyclists can take their whiskey sample to enjoy later.
The distillery is largely wheelchair accessible—the museum, bar, café, and shop are all on one floor, and disabled parking and restrooms available. The production area tour includes steps, but an alternative route that covers the still house and warehouse is entirely flat.
How to get there
Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery is located on the outskirts of the town of Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire, accessible on the A827, with parking available on-site. Buses from Perth and Dunkeld stop near the distillery, while taxis can be taken from Dunkeld, Birnam, and Pitlochry. A guided tour is a good option, particularly if you plan to sample the whisky, and often includes transfers from many major cities in Scotland.
When to get there
Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Since it’s a working distillery, opening times can vary, and it’s recommended that visitors book ahead online to avoid disappointment. The distillery’s silent season runs from March 4 to March 29, when visitors do not have access to the production area or warehouse.
Perthshire distilleries
In addition to Dewar’s Aberfeldy, Perthshire is home to several other notable whisky distilleries, including Glenturret Distillery, thought to be Scotland’s oldest working distillery; Edradour Distillery, one of the smallest distilleries; and Dalwhinnie Distillery, a picturesque distillery sitting between two mountain ranges.
