Dhauli Hill

Overlooking the Daya River in the southern part of Bhubaneswar, Dhauli Hill is known for its Dhauli Shanti Stupa, also called the "peace pagoda." It's one of many sites across India with an "edict of Ashoka," an inscription attributed to the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, who was instrumental in spreading Buddhism across the subcontinent.

Most visitors base themselves in the heart of Bhubaneswar and visit the hill independently or on a half- or full-day tour. Options include tours that cover a range of attractions, as well as itineraries that focus on religious and historic sights in and around the city, including the nearby Khandagiri Caves.

How to get there
Dhauli Hill is just south of Bhubaneswar, about a 30-minute drive from the city center. The easiest way to get there is by joining a tour that includes transportation. You can also take a taxi or auto-rickshaw, but it's a good idea to pay them extra to wait for you and take you back, as availability is sometimes limited.
When to get there
The best time to visit Dhauli Hill is first thing in the morning, when temperatures tend to be cooler, or just before evening for the sunset views. For the most pleasant weather in Bhubaneswar, visit between October and March, when temperatures are slightly lower and there’s not typically too much rainfall.
Visiting the Lingaraja Temple
History-loving travelers should also consider visiting the Lingaraja Temple, one of Odisha's most important Hindu pilgrimage sites. It dates back to the 11th century and features beautiful architecture in the Kalinga style. If you're not Hindu, you won't be allowed inside, but you can still view it from a dedicated platform nearby.
