Dilwara Jain Temples
Mount Abu, India, 307501
On the outskirts of the Rajasthani city of Mount Abu, the Dilwara Jain Temples are a group of five beautiful temples made of expertly carved white marble. Most date back to the 11th–13th centuries. The temples are a Jain site of worship to this day, but they're also open to non-Jain visitors who come to admire the artistry.
The basics
The Dilwara Temple Complex comprises five different temples, each with its own characteristics. The oldest is the Vimal Vasahi Temple, which is dedicated to the first tirthankara, Risabhanatha, as is the Pittalhar Temple, which contains a brass idol of Risabhanatha. The Luna Vasahi Temple, constructed in the 13th century, is considered among the most impressive, owing to its gorgeous dome interior adorned with incredibly intricate carvings.
Things to know before you go
The Dilwara Jain Temples are a must-see for travelers interested in history, theology, art, and architecture.
You'll be expected to dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering the temples.
On-site facilities include a restaurant that’s open for all three meals, as well as a guesthouse for religious pilgrims.
How to get there
The temple complex is located in Delwara, a short taxi or autorickshaw ride away from the Mount Abu city center. You can take a bus to the temples, as well. While most people who visit the complex base themselves in Mount Abu, you can also visit on a day trip from Udaipur (a 3- to 4-hour drive away).
When to get there
The temples are open daily throughout the year. They open early in the morning for devotees and remain open well into the evening, but tourists who are not visiting for religious purposes can only visit from late morning to early evening.
Things to do in Mount Abu
Mount Abu offers plenty of things to see and do. It's Rajasthan's only hill station, keeping temperatures cooler than other parts of the desert state, making it a great place for strolls. Popular spots in town include Sunset Point, on the western end of town, and Nakki Lake, in the heart of it all. Nature lovers should consider a visit to the Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary, a short drive away.
