Dunn's River Falls

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Dunn's River Falls is a spectacular White River waterfall near Jamaica’s Ocho Rios. Here, refreshing, cold mountain water cascades 1,000 feet (300 meters) down naturally terraced steps. The way the world-famous falls renew themselves via regular deposits of calcium carbonate and sodium is fascinating. You don’t even have to be a fan of geology to appreciate it. Meanwhile, movie buffs will recognize these iconic waterfalls from films that are even more iconic. For example, Dr. No, starring Sean Connery, and Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise.

The basics

Many visitors make it a goal to climb the terraced falls, which are 600 feet tall. Of course, while you're at Dunn’s River Falls, be sure to stop at one of the lagoons, admire the natural wonder from the top, and take a dip if you don’t mind getting wet. Many Dunn's River Falls tours also combine a visit to the falls and park with river tubing, a shopping tour in Ocho Rios, a party cruise, or a stop at the Blue Hole or Luminous Lagoon.

If you don’t want to do a full-day tour and just need Dunn’s River Falls tickets, that’s also an option. Tickets, which include a licensed tour guide, costs US$25 per adult and US$17 per child. There is no time limit, you can stay as long as you like. That said, the falls are only open from 8:30 am–4pm on regular days and 7am–4pm on days when cruise ships are in town.

Things to know before you go

  • Those who won’t be climbing the waterfalls can hang out at the observation deck, made for sunning and viewing.

  • You’ll find a snack bar and souvenirs for sale on the premises.

  • Wear water shoes or sandals suitable for the slippery rocks.

  • Bring cash for entrance fees (if visiting on your own) and a waterproof camera or waterproof case for your phone and other valuables.

How to get there

Dunn's River Falls are about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from Ocho Rios and roughly 70 miles (112 kilometers) from Montego Bay. Visitors can drive to the falls in under 3 hours from most parts of the island, or arrive as part of an organized tour. You can also come from Kingston, which is approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast.

When to get there

First thing in the morning is your best bet at this popular tourist attraction. While partying vacationers are sleeping off last night’s tropical cocktails, you can get a jump on the hike to the top without huge crowds. And if you can avoid a day when cruise ships are in town, you'll be glad you thought ahead. Dunn’s River Falls is open every day of the year, rain or shine.

More natural attractions in Jamaica

Dunn's River Falls is a top Jamaica attraction, but it's far from the only naturally beautiful spot on the island. After enjoying the cooling waters of Dunn's River, head to the Seven Mile Beach for some sunbathing or water sports, or head below ground to the Green Grotto Caves. Meanwhile, the spectacular Blue Mountains are unmissable.
