Dusit Palace
Equestrian Statue Plaza, Dusit, Bangkok, Thailand, 10300
Forget everything you imagine a Thai palace to look like before visiting the Dusit Palace. Built in the early years of the 20th century by the first Thai king to visit Europe (King Rama V), the European influences are immediately clear. Dusit Palace is a whole complex rather than a single building, however, and there’s a lot to explore.
The Basics
The Dusit Palace complex houses a number of museums and cultural attractions. One of the finest buildings is the hexagonal-roofed Vimanmek Teak Mansion, apparently built without nails. It was Rama V’s home in the early years of last century. Visitors who want to see inside must take a guided tour (in English), which depart regularly. Many travelers visit independently as there are many things to see and do at the park. Some guided tours of Bangkok also include Dusit Palace.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The palace complex houses the Ancient Cloth Museum, the white marble Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, the Royal Thai Elephant Museum, Wat Benchamabophit, the Museum of Floral Culture, the Dusit Zoo, and more.
- Entrance is free with a Grand Palace entrance ticket. Otherwise, there is an entry fee.
- There’s a strict dress code to enter the palace, as it’s royal property: wear shirts with long sleeves and no shorts, cropped trousers, or short skirts.
How to Get There
The Dusit Palace complex is northeast of the Grand Palace and Old Town area/Banglamphu. The nearest Skytrain station is Phraya Thai. From there, take a taxi or motorbike taxi the rest of the way.
When to Get There
The Dusit Palace is open every day except Monday, from 9.30am until 4pm. It’s a popular destination for Thai school groups, so expect it to be busy on weekdays as well as weekends.
Visit the Grand Palace
For a more traditional, typical Thai palace experience, check out the incredible Grand Palace. The complex is full of temples and structures covered in gold, mirrors, colorful tiles, statues of Buddhist figures, and other decorations. It’s dazzling, and a must-visit attraction in Bangkok.
