Dusseldorf Old Town Hall (Rathaus Dusseldorf)

Marktplatz 2, Düsseldorf, Rhine River, 40213

With its grand Renaissance-style façade and imposing clock tower standing watch over the central Marktplatz, Dusseldorf Old Town Hall (Rathaus Dusseldorf) is one of the city’s most attractive buildings. Dating back to the 16th century, it’s also among Dusseldorf’s oldest landmarks, one of just a handful that remained intact post-WWII.

The basics

Whether exploring Dusseldorf on a walking tour, riding the hop-on hop-hop-off bus around the city, or participating in a self-guided urban Scavenger Hunt, the Old Town Hall will surely be on your itinerary. Known for its striking façade, the work of architect Heinrich Tussmann, and the bronze equestrian statue of Elector Jan Wellem that stands outside the entrance, the architectural monument also provides the backdrop for Dusseldorf’s annual Christmas market.

Things to know before you go

  • Visitors can enjoy views of the Rathaus from the outside, but no interior visits are available.

  • There are several restaurants and cafés located on and around the Marktplatz, along with public restrooms at the southwest corner of the square.

  • The Marktplatz is easily accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The Old Town Hall is located on Marktplatz in the heart of Dusseldorf Old Town (Altstadt) and just off the Rhine River Promenade. It’s easy to reach the Rathaus on foot while strolling around the cobbled lanes of the historic center, or else take the subway to D-Heinrich-Heine-Allee U station, from where it’s a 5-minute walk.

When to get there

The Marktplatz can get busy, so come on a weekday morning for the best chance of a crowd-free view, or swing by in the evening to see the Rathaus beautifully illuminated. Undoubtedly, the most atmospheric time to visit is over the festive period to experience the Dusseldorf Christmas Market.

A walking tour of Dusseldorf Old Town

The narrow lanes of Dusseldorf’s Old Town or Altstadt are perhaps most famous for their many bars, pubs, and restaurants―more than 260 if you’re counting―leading to its nickname as “the longest bar in the world.” Before you start on the Altbiers (local beer), take a walk along the scenic Rhine River Promenade, passing the Burgplatz viewpoint, the Old Harbor (Alter Hafen), and the City Museum (Stadt Museum), and relax at the riverfront Rheinwiesen park.
