Duwisib Castle
Duwisib Castle, Alt Duwisib, Namibia
The red stone crenellations of Duwisib Castle stand out against the brilliant blue sky of the Namibian desert, making for a dramatic scene. Despite the castle’s medieval appearance, it was only built in 1909 to serve as the residence of a German military officer. Today, it operates as a national monument and museum.
The basics
After falling into disrepair, the castle has begun a new life with exhibits on the history of the region and its previous owners. You’ll be able to get a sense of life as it was, as the castle is filled with period-accurate furnishings and artwork. In the surrounding desert, you might spot wild horses that are said to be descended from the horses of the original owners. It’s an excellent stop on a tour of the region or as a stop on your way to Namib-Naukluft National Park.
Things to know before you go
Bring cash to pay for your entry to the castle, as cards aren’t accepted.
If you’re continuing to Namib-Naukluft, leave at least four hours before sunset to ensure you won’t be driving in the dark.
Make sure to fuel up in Maltahohe or Helmeringhausen if you’re low on gas—they’re the last two settlements with gas stations before you reach the castle.
How to get there
You can reach the castle from Windhoek in 4.5 hours by car via the B1. It’s in a remote region without many attractions or amenities around, so it’s best visited as a stop along on your travels elsewhere, rather than going too far out of your way.
When to get there
Visit Duwisib Castle during the winter (May-October) for cool, dry weather. The desert temperatures are more manageable and it’s a great time of year to take a safari in one of the nearby game parks. Make sure you check online for current hours of operation for the castle, as it goes through periods of closure for renovations and updates.
Relax like a royal
While Duwisib Castle isn’t consistently open for overnight guests, the nearby Duwisib Guest Farm is a great option for visitors who want to break up the drive between the next destination. It’s a charming guesthouse with shady campsites and an outdoor pool where you can paddle under the wide blue sky.
