POINT OF INTEREST

Eden Brown Estate

Whitehall, Nevis

Built in 1740, the Eden Brown Estate is a former sugar and cotton plantation whose great house and outbuildings are in a state of beautiful disrepair. Encroaching wildflowers and overgrown grass surround the ruins, giving this hardly accessed site a magical, haunted feel. In fact, it's the most popular place on the island to spot a ghost.

The Basics

Meander the estate grounds and soak up the ghostly lore of the dilapidated old plantation. As the story goes, a woman named Julia Huggins was about to marry her fiancé in 1822 when the groom and his best man killed each other in a duel. After the bloody affair, Julia became a spinster recluse and her lonely spirit is said to wander the grounds.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Eden Brown Estate is an ideal spot for adventure seekers and nature lovers.
  • Admission is free, though the site is poorly maintained.
  • No access for wheelchair users or strollers.
  • Read information signs to know about plantation history.
  • No restrooms are on-site.

How to Get There

Eden Brown Estate is located on the east coast of Nevis, about a 15-minutes drive from the center of Charlestown. Head east on Government Road and turn left onto Zion road. Eden Brown Estate will be on the left hand side. Limited parking space is available. No public transportation options are available.

When to Get There

The estate is open daily, from morning until late evening. Come early in the morning to watch plantation wildlife at their most active, or the late evening to avoid the hot afternoon sun and crowds. Peak season on Nevis runs from December to April. During the summer months, the island is quiet and hot, with a possibility of hurricanes in September or October.

Windward Sands Beach

After a tour of the Eden Brown Estate, drive about ten minutes up the coast to Windward Beach, a remote, unspoiled gray sandy expanse ideal for body surfing, peaceful strolls along the shore, and gazing at the pretty sight of Barbuda if the sky is clear. Since there aren’t any facilities here, be sure to pack a snack and bring water.
