Eglise Saint-Michel de Dijon
5 Pl. Saint-Michel, Dijon, France, 21000
One of the Burgundy region’s grandest churches and architectural landmarks, St. Michael’s Church (Église Saint-Michel de Dijon) traces its history back thousands of years. Known for its distinctive blend of Renaissance and Gothic architecture, and instantly recognizable for its soaring towers and sculptured portals, the designated historic monument is a must-visit on any Dijon sightseeing itinerary.
The basics
As soon as it comes into view, it’s clear that Dijon’s St. Michael's Church is special. Its soaring heights and decorative facade—including richly carved portals, which depict scenes from the Last Judgment—are some of its most famous features. But it’s worth heading inside, as the church holds further treasures. In addition to its grandly soaring interior, the landmark is known for its historic organ, carved wooden choir, and paintings by Franz Kraus.
St. Michael’s Church is easy to visit independently while sightseeing day in Dijon. It’s also included in a number of Dijon tour itineraries, including city walking tours; it’s worth exploring with a local guide to learn more about its history and architectural features.
Things to know before you go
As this is an active site of worship, it’s recommended to dress modestly—wear clothing that covers knees and shoulders.
Be respectful of other worshipers and refrain from talking loudly or taking photos when services are being held.
The church is free to visit and you do not need to make reservations to stop by.
How to get there
St. Michael’s Church is located at 5 Place Saint-Michel, right in the center of Dijon. It is around 10 minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot from Dijon-Ville, the city’s major train station. You can also take the T1 and T2 tram lines to République, a 10-minute walk away, or use local bus routes.
When to get there
St. Michael’s Church is open every day, from morning until early evening. Mass is held once daily, generally in the morning, except on Sundays, when it’s held twice. If you plan to visit as a tourist, it’s best to avoid coming during Mass to avoid disturbing parishioners.
