POINT OF INTEREST

El Golfo

Lanzarote, Lanzarote, 35570

Far removed from the golden sands of Lanzarote’s beach resorts, El Golfo is one of the island’s most unique geological areas. The star attraction is the bright green crater lake on a black sand beach, which gets its distinctive color from the Ruppia Maritima algae that lives in the waters.

The Basics

Looking down over the beach from the surrounding cliff tops is the best way to view the contrasting colors and shapes of El Golfo. The lime-green waters of the crater lake appear almost luminous against the beach, which blends black volcanic sand and green Olivine stones. Most tours of the southern portion of Lanzarote stop at El Golfo, Timanfaya National Park, and El Golfo village, and save you the hassle of car hire.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Admission to the beach and lagoon is free.

  • Remember to wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for walking over rocky surfaces.

  • Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the area offers very little shade.

  • Slippery and uneven terrain means that El Golfo is difficult for travelers with limited mobility to access.

How to Get There

The coastal village and crater lake of El Golfo lie on the southwest coast of Lanzarote, close to Timanfaya National Park. The best way to get there is by car or by hiking the 6-mile (10-kilometer) coastal walk from Playa de la Madera.

When to Get There

El Golfo ranks among the best spots in Lanzarote to watch the sunset. Get there early to snap some crowd-free photos of the green lagoon or plan to visit on a clear day, when sunlight enhances the contrast of the landscape’s colors.

Exploring the Surrounds of El Golfo

Combine your excursion to El Golfo with a stop at the nearby sea cliffs of Los Hervideros. Considered one of Lanzarote’s most-scenic spots, Los Hervideros were formed by volcanic eruptions that created a series of jagged rock formations, sea caves, and stone arches. When the waves crash against the cliffs, the churning water appears to boil, giving the site its name.
