Ellenbogen
Sylt, Germany, 25992
Ellenbogen—meaning “elbow” in German—is quite literally an area shaped like an elbow, located on the northernmost tip of the island of Sylt, which boasts unspoiled natural beauty. This wild landscape features grassy dunes, pristine beaches, and lighthouses. Ideal for a scenic escape from city life, you can cycle, hike, or relax on the beach, while enjoying the serene surroundings.
The basics
Many travelers come here independently from Hamburg—often as a day trip when the weather is good. Once on Sylt island, you can venture to Ellenbogen for outdoor activities, such as hiking, or surfing lessons with surfboard and wetsuit rental included (ideal for those who can’t carry heavy gear from Hamburg). The island has a series of well-maintained cycling trails.
Things to know before you go
It’s best to bring snacks and bottled water with you if you’re planning on a hike as amenities are limited.
Be careful when swimming as there are no lifeguards on the beaches.
If you’re traveling by car, a toll price may be applicable for accessing the private road that leads up to Ellenbogen.
Ellenbogen is a popular place for photo shoots, such as for engagements or weddings.
How to get there
Ellenbogen, on the island of Sylt, is accessible by car ferry, car train, flight, or regular train. For the car train, embark at Niebull station and drive to Ellenbogen upon arrival. Alternatively, take a train from Hamburg (Altona) to Westerland station on Sylt, followed by a 30-minute taxi to Ellenbogen. For a car ferry, travel from Romo, Sylt’s neighboring Danish island. The island also has Sylt Airport with a summer schedule to major German cities.
When to get there
The best time to visit Ellenbogen is during the summer months (July and August) when the weather is warmest, so ideal for cycling, hiking, dining outdoors, or spending time on the beach. If you want to avoid the crowds, then consider coming in June or September instead, when the weather is still good but it’s typically quieter.
Best places to eat and drink on Sylt
