Esplanada dos Ministérios
Esplanada dos Ministérios, Brasilia, Brazil, 70050-000
Brasilia’s grand monumental boulevard is the centerpiece of architect Oscar Niemeyer’s modernist cityscape and a highlight of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed city. At the eastern end of the Monumental Axis, the Esplanada dos Ministérios features a series of manicured lawns flanked by 17 homogenous buildings, the sites of Brazil’s federal ministries.
The basics
Most Brasilia sightseeing tours visit the Esplanada dos Ministérios, often in combination with nearby sights such as the Cathedral of Brasilia (Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida), the Congresso Nacional, the Museu Nacional da República, and Itamaraty Palace. Opt for a walking or cycling tour, join an architecture tour that focuses on the UNESCO-listed landmarks, or take a night to experience the illuminated monuments after dark. Dedicated tours also focus on Brasilia’s Federal District, affording insight into the different government buildings and the opportunity to step inside.
Things to know before you go
During the work week, you’ll find several street-food vendors along the Esplanade.
Some of the government buildings are open to the public, but you’ll need to join a guided tour.
The Esplanade is largely accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
The Esplanada dos Ministérios lies along the central Monumental Axis, making it easy to find. While it’s generally safe to walk around this area during daylight hours, it’s best to arrive by car. Taxis and Ubers are widely available, and city tours are a convenient option too.
When to get there
You can visit the Esplanada dos Ministérios at any time, but the Federal District is typically livelier on weekdays, when the area fills up with government employees. It’s quieter on the weekends, but you can still stroll around and admire the sights.
Landmark buildings of the Federal District
Brazil’s political epicenter is home to many of its most striking buildings. At the eastern end of the Esplanade, Three Powers Plaza is surrounded by the National Congress, Supreme Court, and Presidential Palace, and flies the Brazilian flag from its central tower. Just west of the National Congress, the Palace of Justice features a waterfall-adorned facade, and Itamaraty Palace, home to the Foreign Ministry, is embellished with concrete arches and floating gardens.
