Faanui Bay, Bora Bora

Faanui Bay on Bora Bora island draws visitors from all over the world, who come to enjoy its unspoiled beauty, beautiful beach and historic church.

The Basics

For a small bay in the middle of the South Pacific, Faanui Bay has plenty of history. Its pink, mint, and white protestant church was built in the 1800s—and still has a thriving congregation today. Additionally, the bay was used as a US military base during the Second World War—the remains of which can still be seen. The fields around the church are filled with tropical fruit plantations, and you can taste the local produce if you join a guided 4x4 tour of the island.

The waters around Bora Bora are well known for excellent snorkeling and diving—you might even catch a glimpse of a majestic manta ray if you are lucky! If staying on dry land is more your speed, the beach at Faanui is the perfect place to while away the hours with a book.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • See if you can find the WWII cannons left behind by American forces at Faanui Canyon.
  • Faanui Bay is the location of Fare Opa marae, a sacred place of worship built with stones decorated with symbols of sea turtles.
  • Accessing the church and beach might be challenging for wheelchair users.

How to Get There

Faanui Bay is located on the northwest coast of Bora Bora, a short drive north of the island’s biggest settlement, Vaitape. The best way to reach Faanui Bay is by taxi or guided tour that includes transport.

When to Get There

Bora Bora is in the South Pacific, where the weather is best from May to October. July and August are the busiest months on the island along with Christmas and New Year. Rainy seasons last from November to April—diving is not recommended at this time of year as the rain can lead to poor visibility.

Diving in Bora Bora

With crystal clear water, barrier reef, and a huge wealth of sea life, diving and snorkeling are some of the best ways to enjoy this beautiful island. From sharks and manta rays to colorful coral gardens and shoals of tropical fish, you’re sure to see a whole host of underwater creatures on your dives. Beginners can sign up to take their dive training certification on the island.
