Fairy Pools
Isle of Skye, Scotland
On the slopes of the Isle of Skye’s Black Cuillin mountains, near Glen Brittle, the vivid blue pools known as the Fairy Pools are so otherworldly it’s easy to imagine how they got their name. One of the island’s top attractions, the Fairy Pools draw visitors keen to snap photos and (if brave) take a bracing dip.
The basics
The Fairy Pools consist of multiple pools of varying sizes, connected by the flowing waters of the Allt Coire a' Mhadaidh, which snakes down the hillside and into the River Brittle. The 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) easy but scenic gravel trail to the pools leads up the river from the first waterfall to different pools. The pools are a typical stop on sightseeing tours around the Isle of Skye, including day trips from Inverness.
Things to know before you go
The Fairy Pools are always free to visit.
Swimmers should be aware that the water can be very cold; wetsuits are recommended.
Follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and take any trash away with you.
Restrooms are available by the parking lot.
You can find refreshments at the nearby Glenbrittle Campsite & Café.
How to get there
To reach the Fairy Pools, you’ll need your own transportation or join a guided tour. From Portree (the capital of the Isle of Skye), it is about a 35-minute drive southwest. Paid parking is available at the start of the trail to the pools.
When to get there
Due to social media, the Fairy Pools have become popular in recent years, so try to arrive early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and find parking—if the lot is full, wait as most visitors stay only a short time. While the pools are at their most beautiful in sunny conditions, the walk is suitable in most weather conditions. Caution is advised after heavy rain and in icy wintery conditions.
Talisker Distillery
The Fairy Pools make for a great stop on the way to the Talisker Distillery, which is a 15-minute drive away. Set on the shores of Loch Harport with dramatic views of the Cuillins, Talisker crafts a sweet, full-bodied single malt and offers tours and tastings. It’s recommended to book in advance online or to book a guided tour of Skye that includes both the Fairy Pools and Talisker Distillery.
