Fanes Waterfall (Cascate di Fanes)
Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, 32043
While the Fanes Waterfall (Cascate di Fanes) may be only accessible by hiking, you’ll be rewarded with vistas of one of the highest and most beautiful waterfalls in the Dolomites. Choose to take an easier, mostly flat route to a viewpoint to see the falls, or choose one of the more challenging hikes.
The basics
Located within Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park (Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo), Fanes Waterfall can be reached via a number of different hiking routes. The most convenient access point is the Felizon bridge, near the entrance to the park—from there, the gentler trail to the viewpoint and back takes about 1.5-2 hours, while the more challenging routes are typically around 4 hours, depending on your ability and fitness. On the longer routes, you can reach the falls and walk beneath its waters. Tours are available, which will help you navigate your route and typically include hiking equipment.
Things to know before you go
The easier trail is mainly flat and suitable for all abilities.
The more challenging routes have sections known as iron path trails (via ferrata), which feature steel bars on bare rock to aid climbing.
Bring hiking basics: water, hat, sunscreen, and a bag to take home all litter.
To hike the iron paths, you’ll need hiking equipment: a helmet, harness, and carabiner. Rentals are available from shops in Cortina.
Some parts of the trails are suitable for bikes.
The park does not always have staff on-site, so hiking is at your own risk.
How to get there
Fanes Waterfall is around a 2.5-drive north of Venice, To reach the Felizon bridge at the entrance to Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park, drive (or bike) north from Cortina d'Ampezzo on State Route 51 (Strada Statale 51) through Fiames and turn left at the sign for Cascate di Fanes. Find parking down the road past the Baita Spiaggia Verde restaurant.
When to get there
While the park is open year-round, in winter the trails can become inaccessible due to snow. Spring is a particularly lovely time to visit—from May to June—as the weather will be pleasant, but there won’t be the crowds that summer can bring. Be sure to set off on your hike with plenty of time to complete your route before dark.
Where to grab a bite near the Fanes Waterfall
Hiking any of the Fanes Waterfall routes can work up an appetite. Luckily, Baita Spiaggia Verde restaurant is close by and offers fantastic views along with the opportunity to eat comforting food alfresco.
