POINT OF INTEREST

Farepiti

Bora Bora, Bora Bora

Farepiti Point—also known as Farepiti Quay and Farepiti Wharf—and is the main deep-water dock on the island of Bora Bora, and the docking point for ships to other islands in French Polynesia including Tahiti.

The Basics

Farepiti Quay was built by American forces during World War II to allow supply ships and other vessels to dock on Bora Bora as part of Operation Bobcat. Nowadays it’s a docking point for inter-island ships. Passenger ferries and cruise ships dock at nearby Vaitape. Just beyond the wharf you'll find another historical attraction—Marae Marotetini—once the most important Polynesian temple on the island.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There’s not a lot to see here, but for visitors interested in WWII history it makes an interesting stop.
  • The Bora Bora yacht club restaurant is located next to Farepiti Point.
  • Getting down to the wharf might be a challenge for people with limited mobility.

How to Get There

Farepiti Point is located between Vaitape (Bora Bora’s capital) and Faanui Bay. It’s best to travel here by car or taxi, or moped. There’s not much public transportation to speak of on the island of Bora Bora, apart from the Le Truck bus that runs to major destinations.

When to Get There

Bora Bora is in the South Pacific and enjoys the best weather from May to October. From November to April it’s considered the rainy season, when heavy downpours and high winds can appear quickly. Diving conditions are at their best during the dry season, as rain can have a negative effect on underwater visibility.

Go Whale Watching

Bora Bora is well known as a diving destination, but if you visit between July and November you can enjoy a different type of wildlife safari—whale watching. Every year, humpback whales make the journey to tropical waters to have their young, and you can join a guided boat tour for the chance to see these majestic creatures up close.
