Fiji Museum
Cakobau Road, Suva, Viti Levu
Fiji is full of history—from the traditional fishing boats that fill its waters to the colorful markets full of artwork. There's nowhere where the country's connection to its past is more apparent than at the Fiji Museum in Suva. It’s full of archaeological artifacts and traditional items that give you a glimpse into the country's rich history.
The basics
The museum is small but its archeological collection goes back 3,700 years. Today, the museum has an art gallery, history section, gift shop, and rotating exhibitions, including ones that trace Fiji's maritime traditions. Housed in Suva's lush botanical gardens, highlights of the collection include a 43-foot (13-meter) voyaging canoe, the rudder of HMS Bounty, and an archive of oral histories that the museum continues to expand.
Things to know before you go
Pack a picnic to enjoy in the botanic gardens after your exploration.
Don’t miss the gift shop—from local artwork to a cultural journal, there are plenty of unique souvenirs on offer.
Check out virtual exhibitions on their website and pinpoint what you want to see in person.
How to get there
From the center of Suva, where you’ll find most of the city’s accommodation, it’s a 10-minute walk to the museum. Take Gladstone Road around the eastern side of Albert Park, and turn right onto Cakobau Road. A path leads through the Thurston Gardens to enter the museum.
When to get there
Open seven days a week, the museum is a lovely spot to explore in the late morning—afterwards, spend some time in the botanic gardens. They’re small, but full of water lilies and fragrant red ginger flowers. Visit Fiji itself in the dry months between May and October.
How to find out what's on at the museum
The museum hosts a variety of community days and events, so check its Instagram account to see if your visit will coincide with anything on the calendar. From hosting cultural exchanges between artists from different Pacific nations to running hands-on workshops, the museum has become a beloved part of the local community.
