POINT OF INTEREST

Fontane Bianche Beach

Viale dei Lidi, Fontane Bianche, Italy, 96100

Set along a bay just south of Syracuse, Fontane Bianche Beach is a popular destination for basking and bathing within striking distance of the city. Freshwater springs bubble up from the seabed, making the water particularly crystalline, and the shallow waves and soft sand are ideal for beachgoers of all ages.

The basics

Stake out a spot on the public area of the beach or rent an umbrella and sunbeds for the day at Fontane Bianche Beach, which has a free waterfront area and several beach clubs with services, including restrooms, changing cabins, and snack bars. There are also several stands where you can rent paddleboats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and sailboats to explore the coastline as far as the rocky outcrop of Punta del Cane to the south.

Things to know before you go

  • Fontane Bianche Beach offers a full range of services, from shops selling beach towels and swimwear to umbrellas and loungers for rent.

  • The bay is lined with clean white sand and lapped by shallow water, making it a top beach destination for families.

  • Many equipment rental stands only take cash, so bring euros to book boats or other water toys.

  • Some beach clubs have paved walkways for wheelchair or stroller access; confirm accessibility in advance.

How to get there

Fontane Bianche Beach is about 10 miles (17 kilometers) south of Syracuse along Sicily’s eastern coastline and is easy to reach by car or taxi. There is also summer train service to the tiny Fontane Bianche station, located in the town center, about a 5-minute walk to the waterfront.

When to get there

Fontane Bianche Beach shutters in winter, so visit between April and October if you want to take advantage of the services along the waterfront. The beach is not cleaned in the off-season, so seaweed and debris washed ashore by the rough seas cover the beach.

The best beaches to visit from Syracuse

Several excellent beaches sit within an hour’s drive from Syracuse, perfect for an easy seaside break. Gallina, about a 30-minute drive south of Syracuse and just beyond Fontane Bianche, is located inside the Cavagrande del Cassabile Nature Reserve and offers golden sand and pristine water. To the north, Brucoli draws bathers from both Syracuse and Catania with its undeveloped rocky coastline, historic castle, and turquoise water.
