Fontfroide Abbey (Abbaye de Fontfroide)

RD 613 Chem. de Fontfroide, Narbonne, France, 11100

Boasting nearly 1,000 years of history, Fontfroide Abbey (Abbaye de Fontfroide) was once one of Europe’s most powerful monasteries. Following its decline, the abbey was restored in the early 20th century by impressionist artist Gustave Fayet. Situated among the dramatic scenery of the Regional Nature Park of the Mediterranean Narbonnaise, Fontfroide Abbey is today a top historical, architectural, and natural attraction.

The basics

Whether you’re interested in religious architecture and history, are seeking a day out in the rugged Languedoc landscape, or are curious about local wine, Fontfroide Abbey is one of the best places to explore in southern France. Immerse yourself in its unique ambiance when you tour its centuries-old cloisters, chapel, and other beautifully preserved buildings, and don’t miss its scenic grounds, which offer views of the surrounding Fontfroide Massif and feature one of the largest rose gardens in France.

You can also head to its cellars to try the abbey’s own selection of wines, or, if visiting from April to October, step into its library, decorated by French symbolist artist Odilon Redon. Fontfroide Abbey can be visited on day trips from Carcassonne, and its proximity to Narbonne makes it easy to see independently.

Things to know before you go

  • Fontfroide Abbey’s restaurant, La Table de Fontfroide, serves lunch daily from February to December, and dinner daily in July and August.

  • Browse for souvenirs in the on-site gift shop.

  • There is paid entry to Fontfroide Abbey, and tickets can be purchased in advance online; children and families receive discounted admission.

  • Dogs on a leash are permitted on abbey grounds, but are not allowed inside any of its buildings.

  • Since the area around the abbey is protected (and subject to wildfires), smoking is prohibited.

  • The abbey hosts a range of exhibitions, talks, and events throughout the year, so it’s worth checking its calendar before your visit.
