Forest Lagoon
Vaðlaskógur 605, Akureyri, Iceland, 605
Just outside Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland, the Forest Lagoon (Skogarboðin) is an idyllic spot for unwinding after adventures in the rugged Icelandic north. Visitors can kick back and relax in this geothermal spa resort while surrounded by natural beauty.
The basics
The Forest Lagoon is tucked among the birch and pine trees of Vaðlaskógur forest, promising a serene retreat in the heart of nature. The resort features two infinity pools overlooking one of Iceland’s longest fjords, Eyjafjörður, as well as two swim-up bars, a Finnish-style dry sauna, cold pool, and bistro serving brunch and dinner. The pools’ waters are fed by a natural hot spring that flows directly from the nearby Vaðlaheiði mountain and maintain a steamy 104°F (40°C) temperature all year round. Admission to the Forest Lagoon is included in some guided tours departing from Akureyri, such as cruise ship excursions to Godafoss waterfall.
Things to know before you go
Towels are not included with admission to the Forest Lagoon, but you can rent them for a small fee.
Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by a guardian (18 years or older). After 10pm, children under 18 must be accompanied by a relative.
The Forest Lagoon can accept up to 200 guests at a time.
How to get there
The Forest Lagoon is just 2.2 miles (3.6 kilometers) southeast of Akureyri and the drive takes less than 10 minutes. There is a free shuttle bus, which departs hourly from Akureyri’s cultural center, Hof. The spa is just off Icelandic Route 1—better-known as the Ring Route—making it an ideal spot for a rest while road tripping.
When to get there
The Forest Lagoon is open from morning until midnight daily. It is a year-round attraction, which offers the chance to bathe under the midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter. As the resort can only accommodate a limited number of guests at a time, it’s best to book in advance to secure your spot.
Icelandic bathing etiquette
Iceland is a country that loves to bathe and so its bathing facilities have an ingrained etiquette that all visitors should respect. It is mandatory to shower completely naked before entering the pool; after showering yourself clean (usually under the watchful eye of a warden), you can then put on your swimsuit and enter the pools.
