Fort Boyard
Île-d'Aix, Fouras, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, 17450
One of France’s most unusual military landmarks, Fort Boyard was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte and completed in 1857. The towering sea fort—located in the Pertuis d'Antioche strait between the Île-d'Aix and Île d'Oléron—looks imposing, but was never used defensively. Today, it serves as a set for the popular Fort Boyard game show.
The basics
When Napoleon first dreamed up a sea fort near Rochefort and La Rochelle, his military engineer Vauban famously told him the project was impossible: “Your Majesty, it would be easier to seize the moon with your teeth than to attempt such an undertaking in such a place,” he supposedly quipped. Nevertheless, the fort was finally completed decades later. Today, the monolithic landmark—the fort measures some 66 feet (20 meters) high—is popular among history and architecture buffs, as well as TV fans: It has hosted the renowned Fort Boyard game show since 1990.
Though Fort Boyard is closed to the public (barring game show participants), there are still options for discovering the monument. Kayak and speedboat tours make it possible to get up close and personal. For loftier views, book a private plane or helicopter tour and admire the fort—plus the region’s coastal scenery—from the air.
Things to know before you go
- To explore a similar, more accessible fort, head to the Fort Énet, which was also commissioned by Napoleon and can be accessed via a causeway at low tide.
- Fine with a virtual tour of the fort? Episodes of the Fort Boyard game show are filmed on-site, and offer a rare glimpse into the historic monument’s interior.
- Fort Boyard is a popular destination for sea kayakers; the Fort Boyard Challenge race is held every October.
How to get there
Fort Boyard is located in the Pertuis d’Antioche strait, some six miles from the French mainland. It is not open to visitors, and guided tours provide the best way to get up close to the landmark. The cities of Rochefort and La Rochelle are both accessible jumping-off points for boat and helicopter tours.
When to get there
Fort Boyard is closed to visitors, though it’s possible to admire the hulking landmark throughout the year. Boat tours are generally hosted seasonally, typically between April and October.
Île-d'Aix and Île d’Orléans
Fort Boyard is sandwiched between two islands—the Île d'Aix and Île d'Oléron—both of which are popular day-trip destinations during the summer months. Head to the Île d’Aix to see two other historical forts (the Fort de la Rade and Fort Liédot), visit its Napoleon-dedicated museum, and enjoy its tranquil beaches. The expansive Île d'Oléron, meanwhile, offers up pretty port towns, sandy beaches, pine forests, and a thriving oyster industry.
