Fuggerei
Jakoberstraße 26, Augsburg, Germany, 86152
The world’s oldest public housing complex is both a historic landmark and a fascinating example of a Catholic social housing system. Founded by the Fugger family in 1521, it’s home to around 150 residents, all of whom pay an annual rent of one Rhenish gulden (less than one euro) and three daily prayers.
The basics
Visitors can explore the Fuggerei on a guided or self-guided tour, and tickets include access to four public areas. Learn about the history of the Fuggerei and life through the ages at the Museum of History and Living, dive into the Fuggerei’s World War II era as you visit the Bunker, and peek inside the Display Residence, which includes exhibitions on the residents, staff, and community culture in the Fuggerei.
Many Augsburg sightseeing tours and walking tours also include the Fuggerei, and visiting with a guide provides additional insight into the unique complex.
Things to know before you go
There is an admission fee to visit the Fuggerei, which includes access to the museums, bunker, and display residence. Children under 7 are free.
Remember that the Fuggerei is home to many residents, so be respectful of their privacy and avoid visiting and photographing areas outside of the display residence.
The Fuggerei complex and museum are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, but the bunker and display residences are not wheelchair accessible.
How to get there
The Fuggerei is located just east of Augsburg Historic Center, less than a 10-minute walk from Rathausplatz. The closest tram stop is Fuggerei on Tram line 1 (direction Lechhausen if you’re coming from the center), which is right outside.
When to get there
The Fuggerei is open to visitors daily year-round, except for Christmas Eve. It’s open morning to evening from April through September, and closes earlier in the evening from October through March. Since visiting the site involves spending time outdoors and walking between different buildings, be sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing.
A walking tour of Augsburg’s Historic Center
Founded by the Romans, Augsburg is the oldest city in Bavaria, and a tour of its Historic Center reveals plenty of surprises. Admire the ruins of its medieval city walls, see architectural highlights such as the rococo Schaezler Palace and the Renaissance City Hall, and visit the legendary Augsburg Puppet Theater. You can also admire the fountains, canals, and historic water towers that make up Augsburg’s UNESCO-listed water management system.
