The history of Fuli Ancient Town, beside the Li River, dates back more than 1,000 years. A picturesque scene set amid some of Yangshuo’s most famous karst formations, many of the town’s cobbled roads and old stone houses remain intact. The village is known for its intricate painted fans, handmade from bamboo and delicate tissue paper.
The Basics
As one of the best-preserved ancient towns in Guilin, Fuli is well worth a visit during your stay in Yangshuo. A popular way to reach the village is by bicycle, and guided bike tours typically include a pedal along the Li River with stops in Fuli, as well as Dutou and Liugong to take in the spectacular views of the surrounding scenery. Those looking to purchase painted fans will find them along the aptly named Fan Street, running through the heart of town.

How to Get There
Fuli Ancient Town is located about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Yangshuo. Taking the bus from the main bus station in Yangshuo takes about 20 minutes, but the most scenic way to get there is on a bicycle via the small village roads along the Li River.
When to Get There
The best times to visit Fuli Ancient Town are from April to June and September to October, when temperatures are mild and comfortable for enjoying the outdoors. In the summer, plan to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Days ending in 2, 5, and 8 are traditional market days—another good time to visit.

The handmade fans created in Fuli Ancient Town range from small handheld fans intended for everyday use to huge pieces of art, which, when hung up, will cover a whole wall. Prices vary according to the size and level of detail incorporated in the fans. But while they range from cheap travel fans to exquisite pieces of art worth hundreds of dollars, they all show intricately painted flowers, the karst landscape of Yangshuo, birds, insects, and Chinese women in traditional outfits.
