The seat of West Java’s government, this architectural landmark in Bandung fuses neoclassical and Indonesian features. While you can’t enter the official government buildings, you can explore the Gedung Sate Museum, home to some interesting multimedia exhibitions that trace the city’s heritage and the construction of the building.
The basics
Highlights of Gedung Sate Museum include a timeline of Bandung and the West Java province; a 3D virtual reality experience where you can explore the building in a hot-air balloon; and an augmented reality floor where you can watch the construction of Gedung Sate through a VR headset. Thanks to its historical significance, Gedung Sate appears on many Badung sightseeing tours; these often depart from the capital of Jakarta on day trips.

How to get there
Gedung Sate is just outside of the center of Bandung, 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from the main thoroughfare of Jalan Asia Afrika. You can reach it by taking a Grab or Gojek taxi (using rideshare apps), or take the Abdul Muis – Ledeng Bus, which takes around 20 minutes.
When to get there
You can admire the exterior anytime, but entry to Gedung Sate is not permitted unless you’re on official business for the West Java government. Gedung Sate Museum is open Tuesday–Sunday from morning to late afternoon; it’s closed on Mondays and public holidays.
