POINT OF INTEREST

Glaciarium Ice Museum

Ruta 11, El Calafate, Santa Cruz, Z9405

An iceberg-inspired feat of architecture rising up over the shores of Lake Argentino and framed by snow-capped peaks, the Glaciarium is a fitting setting for a museum devoted to Patagonia’s glacial landscapes. Learn about the region’s unique geology and environmental concerns through multimedia displays and interactive exhibitions.

The Basics

Many glacier tours from El Calafate include a stop at the Glaciarium, conveniently situated along the road to the Perito Moreno Glacier. Inside, exhibitions offer insight into Patagonia’s geology; the formation, exploration, and evolution of the Patagonian glaciers; and the effects of climate change. There is a wealth of information on glaciers and glaciology, and highlights include 3D, scale models of the Southern Patagonia ice field, some stunning photography of the glaciers, and two short films.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Plan up to two hours to visit the Glaciarium.

  • Information panels are available in English and Spanish.

  • There is a café, an ice bar, and a gift shop on-site.

  • The Glaciarium is wheelchair-accessible.

How to Get There

The Glaciarium is located around 5 miles (8 kilometers) west of El Calafate, along Route 11—the road that leads to the Perito Moreno Glacier. There is plenty of free parking on-site. Hourly shuttle buses also run from outside the tourist office in El Calafate to the museum.

When to Get There

The Glaciarium is open daily from morning to night from September to April and from late morning to night from May to August.

Glaciobar Branca

As Argentina’s first ice bar (and the only one that uses ice from the Patagonian glaciers), the Glaciobar Branca is an unmissable experience for visitors to the Glaciarium. The entire bar is carved from ice, including glasses, tables, chairs, and couches, and the entrance fee includes a drink—served on ice, of course. With space for just 25 people, visits are limited to 20 minutes, and as temperatures are below freezing, guests are given warm wraps, gloves, and boots before entering.
