Glenshane Pass
Glenshane Road, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, BT46 5JY
Glenshane Pass is a prominent mountain pass that most people cross when traveling between the two cities. It cuts through the Sperrin Mountains on the A6 motorway, which links Londonderry and Belfast. It's also the gateway to the Glenshane Forest, a heather moorland spanning around 2,470 acres (1,000 hectares).
The basics
If you're traveling between Belfast and Londonderry and aren't heading up along the coast to check out the Giant's Causeway, chances are high that you'll cross Glenshane Pass. Consider taking a break along the way at the Ponderosa. At 946 feet (288 meters) above sea level, it touts itself as Ireland's highest-elevation bar and restaurant. Dating to 1858, this traditional spot is a good place to try out local dishes while you stretch your legs.
Things to know before you go
The fastest way to get between Belfast and Londonderry takes you over the Glenshane Pass.
Drive carefully in this area, as it can be foggy.
If you don't have experience with right-hand steering and driving on the left, you may feel more comfortable in a taxi or bus.
How to get there
Glenshane Pass is in the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the A6 between Belfast and Londonderry. It's just over a half-hour drive from Londonderry and about 50 minutes by car from Belfast. The easiest way to get there is by either bus, taxi, or rental car.
When to get there
Glenshane Pass is accessible throughout the year. Temperatures rarely drop below freezing in the winter, but it's wise to be wary of ice patches on the road if coming in the coldest months. As elsewhere in Northern Ireland, the weather is most pleasant in summer. Don't expect high temperatures no matter when you visit.
Giant’s Causeway
An alternative route between Belfast and Londonderry will take you to the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, near the UNESCO-listed Giant’s Causeway. This narrow suspension bridge links the mainland to Carrick-a-Rede Island and is renowned for its views of the Atlantic. While the bridge may feel rickety, it's not. The National Trust manages it, and it's perfectly safe.
