Glenturret Distillery

Thought to be Scotland’s oldest working distillery, Glenturret has an idyllic setting in the heart of the Perthshire countryside. Open since 1775, a visit to the distillery offers the chance to learn about the traditional methods—including mashing by hand and cutting by eye—still used today to produce Glenturret Highland single malt.

The basics

Glenturret Distillery offers a selection of different themed tours, from a tasting experience to a blending experience to “The Ultimate Whisky Experience,” the only opportunity in the world where visitors get to work alongside the distillery’s stillmen, hand rousing the malted barley in the open mash tun. Each experience offers a deeper insight into the distillery’s history and processes.

A great way to get a taste of the diversity of Scotland’s whiskies is to book a guided tour that includes visits to several different distilleries in one day. This also gives you the added benefit of skipping the worry about assigning a designated driver: all members of your party can enjoy a few drams.

Things to know before you go

*Glenturret Distillery is a must-visit for whisky lovers. *There is a store on site, which sells whiskies, as well as branded glassware. *The distillery is wheelchair accessible. *It is recommended to wear closed-toe footwear, with no heels.

How to get there

Glenturret Distillery is a 35-minute drive west of the city of Perth. If using public transit, get the Stagecoach No15 bus from Perth Train Stationl to Crieff, which stops just a short walk from the distillery (you can ask the driver to stop).

When to get there

The distillery is open all year round, but closed on December 25 and 26 and January 1. Summer opening hours are 10 am until 6 pm (last tour 90 minutes before closing) and winter hours are 10 am until 5 pm (last tour 90 minutes before closing). It is advisable to pre-book your tour, especially in summer.

The Glenturret Distillery Restaurant

The distillery has a restaurant on site, serving local produce for lunch, as well as home baked cakes and snacks throughout the day. During the summer months, you can sit out on the terrace and enjoy the scenery, while a fireside keeps you cozy during winter.
