This village on the north coast of Trinidad is an eco-tourism hot spot, best known for its leatherback sea turtle nesting grounds at Grande Riviere Beach. One of the more remote settlements of Trinidad and Tobago, Grande Riviere takes pride in its sustainability practices and low-impact activities, including kayaking, bird-watching, and hiking to such places as Homard River Waterfall.
The basics
Originally settled by Venezuelan immigrants and cultivated with cacao and other cash crops, Grande Riviere is now an off-the-beaten-path locale perfect for those looking for a quiet, eco-friendly escape. And while Grande Riviere may be lacking in conventional facilities (there are hotels on the beach that use low lighting so as not to disturb the leatherback turtle), it more than makes up for it with its wild surroundings, complete with untouched rain forest, pristine rivers and pools, and remote beaches.
Things to know before you go
*In addition to its smattering of hotels, the town has some campgrounds where guests are permitted to stay.
*Since Grande Riviere Beach is a vital nesting ground for leatherback sea turtles, permits are required to visit the protected beach.
*Be mindful of your ecological impact and follow local rules when visiting Grande Riviere, especially during nesting season.
How to get there
Grande Riviere is located on the northeastern tip of Trinidad, roughly 62 miles (100 kilometers) from Port of Spain, and is best reached by car.
When to get there
From March to September, leatherback sea turtles nest along the sandy shores of Grande Riviere. And if you're planning on hitting the beach, swimming is not advised November through April, as waves are very strong.
