Located on the southeastern tip of St. Kitts, Great Salt Pond is a tranquil spot to hike paths and birdwatch. Bordered by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the pond has bright white sand beaches within walking distance. Body surfing is popular in the rougher waters of the Atlantic side, while snorkeling and swimming are the names of the games on the calm Caribbean side.
The Basics
Sugary white sands line the beach on both sides of the pond,xa0 and an array of birds frequently come onto shore. Most half-day and full-day sightseeing tours cover the island’s history and nature and start in Basseterre, visiting heritage landmarks such as Independence Square. From the capital, take a scenic drive to Romney Manor, the home of Caribelle Batik plantation, and picturesque Brimstone Hill Fortress and Black Rocks, peculiar rock formations created from lava flows from the Liamuiga volcano. Other tours tack on aquatic adventures such as kayak and snorkeling excursions along the coastline’s majestic cliffs and secluded coves.

How to Get There
The Great Salt Pond is located at the tip of the southeastern peninsula of St. Kitts, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from White House Bay and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from Turtle Beach. The best way to get to the Great Salt Pond is by car or taxi, as buses do not go directly to the area. Either way, stop at White House Bay and hike a few minutes down the coast of Ballast Bay to find the beach.
When to Get There
Great Salt Pond is an ideal year-round destination. Peak season runs from December to April, during which time the biggest event of the year, National Carnival (also known as Sugar Mas), ignites the island in the run up to Christmas and New Year. For a more quiet time, visit between May and July when crowds dwindle.
Southeast Peninsula
Several natural attractions are located along the Southeast Peninsula, including White House Bay, Turtle Beach, Cockleshell Bay, and the Great Salt Pond. For many years, this part of the island has been popular among locals for its stretch of pristine beaches and woody, hilly areas great for sightseeing.
