POINT OF INTEREST

Gris Gris Cape

Mauritius

On the southernmost part of Mauritius, Gris Gris Cape is a beautiful—but treacherous—spot where the land meets the sea. Here, you can take in views of water crashing up against the "Roche Qui Pleure" (French for “the crying rock”), named as such because the violent waters make it look like it is, indeed, weeping.

The basics

The beach at Gris Gris Cape is gorgeous, with golden sands and turquoise waters, and a trail leads from the parking lot to a viewpoint from where you can take it all in. However, it's best to keep your distance and never brave swimming in the dangerous waters. Many tours of the island's southern reaches stop to check out this natural wonder, and they often include stops at other natural attractions in the area, including the Valley of Colors.

Things to know before you go

  • Waves crashing against the Gris Gris Cape are a must-see for nature lovers and photographers.

  • Do not swim in the waters at Gris Gris cape, even if you’re experienced. It’s far too dangerous.

  • Wear sunscreen or a wide-brimmed hat during your visit, and bring bottled water.

How to get there

Gris Gris Cape is at the southernmost part of the island, just under an hour's drive south of Port Louis (via the M2 and the A9) near Souillac. Many tours that cover the southern part of the island stop at the cape, and most include transportation from your hotel for extra convenience.

When to get there

The best time to visit Gris Gris Cape is first thing in the morning when you can watch the sunrise or just before sunset. As with elsewhere on the island, you can expect the best weather if you visit between May and the middle of October when there’s less chance of rain.

Visiting the Blue Bay Marine Park

While you won't want to swim at Gris Gris Beach, you can get your fill of surf and sand at Blue Bay Marine Park in the island's southeastern part. The waters here are shallow, warm, and full of vibrant tropical fish and coral, making it a hotspot for glass-bottom boat tours, snorkeling cruises, and diving trips.
