Gruta de las Maravillas

Also known as the Cave of Wonders or Grotto of Wonders, Gruta de las Maravillas is an extensive network of limestone caves underneath Aracena in Andalucia. The first cave in Spain opened to the public. The complex features numerous chambers, underground lakes, and fantastical formations, and it can be explored on a guided tour.
The basics
Gruta de las Maravillas can only be visited on a guided tour, which covers two levels and around 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) of paths throughout the Gruta de las Maravillas, passing a variety of chambers and underground lakes, including the Conch Chamber, Great Lake, Gallery of Lakes, Naked Chamber, Chickpea Chamber, and Cathedral Hall, among others, along with a variety of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstones, helictites, and other formations. Visit the Gruta de las Maravillas independently or as part of a sightseeing tour of the Aracena area from Seville.
Things to know before you go
Guided tours are available in Spanish only. Audio guides are available in different languages.
Visitor numbers are capped at 1,000 per day. It’s a good idea to book tickets in advance.
Gruta de las Maravillas is not wheelchair accessible or suitable for visitors with mobility issues.
Photos are not permitted inside the caves.
How to get there
Gruta de las Maravillas is located in the town of Aracena in the north of Huelva province in Andalucia. Take the N-433 highway from Seville or the N-435 highway from Extremadura or Huelva. Some guided tours of the Aracena region stop at the cave complex and include transfers from Seville.
When to get there
Gruta de las Maravillas is open daily from 10am to 1:30pm and from 3 to 6pm, with extended hours until 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays in July and August. The cave is closed on Dec. 24, 25, and 31 and Jan. 6. Guided tours last around 45 minutes.

In addition to the Gruta de las Maravillas, popular attractions in Aracena include the Moorish Aracena Castle, the Ham Museum, and the Iberian Pig Interpretation Center—all three of which are included in the Aracena Tourist Pass. The Parque Natural de las Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche is also located nearby and offers numerous hiking trails and other outdoor activities.
