Günzburg Old Town

Günzburg, Germany, 89312

One of Germany’s oldest towns, Günzburg on the Danube River traces its roots back to Roman times. Its history is best seen in its handsome old town, aka the altstadt. If you visit this pedestrian area today, you’ll stumble upon colorful medieval architecture, history-steeped streets linked to the Habsburgs, and a lively cluster of cafés and restaurants.

The basics

LEGOLAND® Germany is the big attraction close to Günzburg, but many visitors miss out on the town’s handsome historical center, opting to take the shuttle directly from the train station to the attraction. However, those who linger in Günzburg are rewarded with a traditional Bavarian-Swabian town, complete with an octagonal city tower for photos, plus all the tourist amenities that visitors could want.

Things to know before you go

  • Günzburg old town is a must for sightseers, with plenty of photo opportunities around its picturesque medieval streets.

  • Wear comfy shoes as the walkways are often uneven with some cobblestone streets.

  • Most of the old town streets are accessible to people who use wheelchairs, although help may be needed on some of the cobbled streets.

How to get there

The closest international airport to Günzburg is Munich, which is around two hours away by train. From the train station, the old town is within a 10-minute walk. Head south along Bahnhofstrasse, away from the river, then turn right onto Dillinger Strasse, which becomes Martktplatz in the old town.

When to get there

Visit in summer for warmer weather and to enjoy long, lazy meals when the old town’s cafes and restaurants spill out onto the streets. If you can, try to visit on a Tuesday when the market is held in the Marktplatz and experience a historic market that has been held most weeks since the Middle Ages. In winter, the visitor numbers are lower, as are the temperatures, so wrap up to stay warm.

The Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche)

If you head to the edge of Günzburg old town, you’ll stumble upon the Church of Our Lady, aka the Frauenkirche. It might appear simple from the outside, but this Roman Catholic gem is worth a look inside to admire its rococo architecture and richly decorated interiors. Shift your gaze upwards to the ceiling and see if you can find the crocodile hiding in the frescoes above.
