Gwalior Fort

Gwalior, India, 474008

Dating back at least a millennium ago, Gwalior Fort is a gargantuan structure made of golden sandstone and lime. It looks over the city of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and is the main draw for most visitors to the city.

The basics

Gwalior Fort is even more impressive on the inside than it is from the exterior. It's divided into five key areas and contains a number of sights, the most notable of which are the rock-hewn Siddhachal Caves, a series of intricately carved temples and monuments depicting the 24 Tirthankaras (the spiritual leaders of Jainism). Virtually all half- and full-day tours of Gwalior spend a significant time at the massive fort. Many also visit the much newer (19th-century) Jai Vilas Palace.

Things to know before you go

  • Gwalior Fort is a must-see for fans of history and architecture.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, no matter what time of year you visit.

  • As with many monuments in India, foreign visitors should be prepared to pay a higher fee.

  • Additional fees apply for taking photos and videos at the fort, and you should purchase your photography/videography ticket at the entry gate to avoid being issued a fine.

How to get there

Gwalior Fort is north of the Gwalior city center, about a 10-minute drive from the train station (without traffic). The station is about 75 minutes from Agra (the home of the Taj Mahal) by train. Taxis and autorickshaws will take you there easily, though it's more convenient to join a tour that includes transportation.

When to get there

Gwalior Fort is open daily throughout the year. The best time to visit is between September and March, when the weather is at its most pleasant, while May and June are best avoided due to the potential for unbearably hot temperatures. To avoid the hottest hours, opt for a morning visit.

All aboard the Gatiman Express

Gwalior is on the Gatiman Express train line, which connects the city with Agra—known for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort—and Delhi. Many day tours to Agra from Delhi rely on this super-fast train line, and while most people get off in Agra, you can continue to Gwalior on the same line.
