Haitang Bay

The basics

One of the best ways to enjoy Haitang Bay is to stay at one of the more than 30 resorts that line the bay, many of which offer a private stretch of beach, pools, and other amenities and attractions. Haitang Bay is an easy day-trip from nearby Sanya, and there’s plenty of beach for visitors to sunbath or stroll. It also offers easy access to Wuzhizhou Island and the China Duty Free mall.

Things to know before you go

• The currents at Haitang Bay can be quite strong, so it’s not ideal for swimming.
• Bring your passport and proof of departure flight to shop at the China Duty Free mall; pick up purchased items at the airport.
• Most hotels and resorts allow non-guests to visit their restaurants.
• The Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark is open to non-guests with paid admission.

How to get there

Haitang Bay is located around 19 miles (30 kilometers) east of Sanya, and around 24 miles (39 kilometers) east of Sanya Phoenix International Airport. It’s easiest to take a taxi from Sanya or the airport. You can also take bus no. 33 from the airport.

When to get there

The weather in Hainan and Haitang Bay is pleasant throughout the year. It’s a popular vacation destination for Chinese tourists, and will be most crowded over Chinese holidays, especially the week-long holidays in May and October. Visit at other times for smaller crowds.

Wuzhizhou Island

Wuzhizhou Island is located in the southern part of Haitang Bay. With a coastline of around 3.5 miles (5.7 kilometers) it’s a popular beachside destination, and it's popular for enjoying outdoor recreation, such as swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Points of interest include the Matsu Temple, Sunrise Rock, and Lover’s Bridge. There are a number of restaurants on the island as well as hotel accommodations for overnight or multi-day stays.
