Hakone Komagatake Ropeway (Komagatake Ropeway Line)

4749-1 Miyada, Hakone, Kamiina, Nagano, 399-4301

Japan's highest aerial tramway, the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway (Komagatake Ropeway Line) is a popular way to take in some of the most scenic views in Japan and the so-called Nagano Alps. The ropeway runs from the edge of Lake Ashi to the summit of Mount Komagatake, carrying passengers 3,115 feet (950 meters) into the sky.

The Basics

On a clear day, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Japan's highest mountain, Mount Fuji, as well as the seven Izu Islands, Lake Ashinoko, and the coastline from the ropeway’s upper station. Nearby is the small Mototsumiya shrine, as well as several hiking trails that lead through the forest from the Komagatake summit down to the shores of Lake Ashinoko, the Owakudani valley, and Sounzan Station. From this station, visitors can board the Hakone Ropeway (a different tramway) for another alpine perspective.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway is wheelchair accessible.

  • During periods of inclement weather or heavy wind, the ropeway may close.

  • If you’re planning to ride the ropeway up and back, save money by purchasing a round-trip ticket.

How to Get There

Access the Komagatake Ropeway from Hakone Park, part of the Fuji Hakone Izu National Park that’s located about 90 minutes by rail from Tokyo. The lower ropeway station at Hakone-en is served by one Odakyu Highway Bus per hour and two Izuhakone buses per hour from the direction of Kojiri. From Moto Hakone, walk 30 minutes or wait for one of the infrequent Izuhakone buses.

When to Get There

The Ropeway operates daily from morning until early evening. The journey to the top takes 7 minutes and 30 seconds, with departures every 10–20 minutes. Ride on a weekday to avoid crowds.

Things to Do at the Lower Station

The lower ropeway station, Hakone-en, is on the shores of Lake Ashinoko and features several attractions. In addition to hotel and souvenir shops, you’ll find a golf course, handicraft workshops, and a small aquarium and petting zoo that’s popular with kids.
