Half Moon Cay

San Salvador Island, Bahamas

Half Moon Cay, also historically known as Little San Salvador Island, is a tiny private island in the Bahamas. Accessible by cruise ship, it's known for its long, crescent-shaped beach and cerulean blue waters with plenty of amenities like cabana rentals and umbrellas and activities including snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. Much of the island has been left as a nature preserve with native vegetation for nesting birds and wildlife.

The basics

You can book a kayaking excursion or glass-bottom boat tour to explore Half Moon Cay’s Bonefish Lagoon; grab snorkeling gear and enter the wading area at Stingray Cove with a guide; or take a walk along a sandy path to see the local flora and fauna. If you’re looking for relaxation, rent clamshell sunshades or umbrellas for lounging on the beach. Snorkeling gear, single-person tubes, Jet Skis, kayaks, water bikes, and stand-up paddleboards are also available to rent here. For those traveling with kids, visit the Half Moon Lagoon Aqua Park, which includes a water-filled playground, slides, floating pads, and more.

Things to know before you go

  • Dining options include an open-air barbecue lunch buffet, the Lobster Shack, and several bars.

  • There is no Wi-Fi on the island.

  • There’s an on-site souvenir shop and straw market.

How to get there

Half Moon Cay is only accessible via major cruise lines. Because it doesn’t have deep water docking, passengers must use tenders to reach the island. Travelers recommend getting in line early to get tender tickets or booking an excursion to be among the first off the ship.

When to get there

Cruises visit Half Moon Cay year-round, but most travelers prefer visiting the Bahamas from mid-December to mid-April when average highs reach roughly 80°F (26°C). To experience fewer crowds, lower prices, and good weather, consider visiting in late October to early November and late April into May. Keep in mind that hurricane season runs from June to November.

Cat Island

Next to Half Moon Cay is Cat Island. Anchored by Mount Alvernia—the Bahamas’ highest point—this island is known for diving, kiteboarding, and its pink sand beach, as well as being the birthplace of rake-and-scrape music, the traditional music of the Bahamas. An annual music festival, which takes place in early June, draws crowds of people to the island.
