The Basics

There are a number of ways to enjoy a night of racing at Happy Valley Racecourse. Visitors can be in the thick of things in the public enclosure and stands, or pay extra to access the members’ private enclosure or a private box with a group. Or watch the action from any number of bars and restaurants, ranging from the course-side Beer Garden to high up in the Racing Club. Purchase different tickets for different levels of access. Some of the venues offer packages that include food and drinks. For the most convenience, join a guided racing tour, which includes transport, food and drinks, a tour of the facilities, and even a betting voucher. Nightlife enthusiasts can keep the party going by combining a stop here with a pub crawl.

How to Get There

Happy Valley Racecourse is located in the Happy Valley area of Hong Kong Island. It’s easiest to take a taxi there. Otherwise, take the tram to the stop at Happy Valley Terminus, Leighton Road, or Morrison Hill Road. The closest MTR station is Causeway Bay (exit A), about a 20-minute walk away.

When to Get There

Horse racing season at Happy Valley Racecourse runs from September to June. Races are normally held on Wednesday nights, and occasionally on the weekends. The first race usually starts at 7:15pm, with seven or eight races over the course of an evening.

Sha Tin Racecourse

Hong Kong’s only other racecourse is located in Sha Tin, in the New Territories, and can accommodate up to 80,000 spectators. Races in Sha Tin are usually held on Sunday afternoons, though sometimes on Saturdays and public holidays as well. The racing season runs from September to early July.
