Harmony Land
5933 Fujiwara, Hiji, Oita, Japan, 879-1502
Hello Kitty fans should make a beeline for Harmony Land, a colorful theme park focused on the Sanrio character. Visitors can meet Hello Kitty, My Melody, Cinnamoroll, and all their favorite characters, watch live performances, go on fairground rides, and see the inside of Hello Kitty’s house at this small-scale park that’s great for young kids.
The Basics
Many of the rides—such as the toy trains—at Harmony Land are suitable for younger kids, while others offer a bit more excitement for older kids and adults, including a Ferris wheel and roller coaster. The park is a manageable size, so it’s a suitable place to come with smaller kids. Most travelers visit Harmony Land independently.
Things to Know Before You Go
Live shows are performed every day, but the times vary, so check these upon arrival.
Visitors from outside Japan can get a discount on entry by showing their passports at the ticket counter.
There are several restaurants, cafés, and snack stands at Harmony Land.
Kids 3 years and under enter for free.
It’s cheaper to visit in the evenings, after 4pm.
The park is wheelchair-accessible, and baby strollers and wheelchairs are available for rent.
How to Get There
Harmony Land is in Oita Prefecture, on the northeastern coast of Japan’s southern Kyushu Island and about a half-hour drive north of the popular spa resort town of Beppu. The easiest way to reach Harmony Land is by private car, but if that’s not possible, take the JR Nippo Main Line train to Youkoku Station, and then a taxi or bus the rest of the way.
When to Get There
Opening hours vary according to the season, and Harmony Land is often closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays; be sure to check ahead of your visit. Much of the park is outside, so it’s a particularly pleasant place to visit when the weather is good.
Enjoy a Hot-Spring Bath in Beppu
Many travelers visit Harmony Land while staying in or around Beppu, a popular onsen (hot-spring-bath) resort town. Relaxing in an onsen is a must-do activity in Beppu, and there are many publicly accessible baths, such as the Takegawara Onsen, which offers both hot-water and sand bathing. Also be sure to view the colorful, mineral-rich bubbling pools, called “hells.”
