Henley Cay
Henley Cay, St. John, 00830
Just off the northwest coast of St. John, Henley Cay is a small uninhabited island separated from the mainland by the Durloe Channel. Spanning 11 acres (4.5 hectares) and only accessible by boat or kayak, Henley Cay is rich in colorful coral, tropical fish, and other marine life. It also offers fantastic snorkeling.
The basics
Since Henley Cay can only be reached by boat or kayak, it sees fewer visitors than other cays and islands around St. John. Snorkeling is the main draw here as much of its reef is in shallow water just 15 feet (4.6 meters) deep. You can charter a boat or rent a kayak and visit independently, or join a snorkeling tour by boat or kayak. Some tours include a hike on Henley Cay.
Things to know before you go
There are no amenities on Henley Cay.
Kayakers can pull ashore on the protected western cove on Henley Cay, while boaters can tie off at the mooring buoy.
Although there’s a protected cove and bay, the cay is surrounded by strong currents on two sides. Snorkelers and kayakers need to be aware of the strong currents near the cay.
How to get there
Henley Cay is across the Durloe Channel from the northern shore of St. John. It’s accessible by boat or kayak from several different locations, including Cruz Bay. Guided tours are available from different points on St. John and are ideal for visitors without boats or kayaks or those with limited experience.
When to get there
Visit Henley Cay between November and June for the most pleasant weather, though bear in mind that mid-December to April is peak season in the US Virgin Islands. July through October is hurricane season; storms will affect water visibility and conditions and can make snorkeling, kayaking, or boating dangerous.
Snorkeling in St. John
St. John offers numerous locations for great snorkeling. Along Leinster Bay, the deliciously named Waterlemon Cay is one of the most popular. For dramatic underwater structures, head to the East End and Haulover Bay North. For deeper water snorkeling without the crowds, try Whistling Cay. For easy access and a family-friendly option, there’s Maho Bay Beach.
