Hermann-Grima House – New Orleans Attractions from Viator.com
New Orleans, LA
Hermann-Grima Historic House is a 19th-century home-turned-museum built in the federal architecture style. Inside, you'll find a courtyard, intact horse stables, and the quarters of enslaved people who worked in the home prior to Emancipation. There's also an open-hearth kitchen where you can watch seasonal cooking demonstrations that showcase dishes that were eaten in the city in the 1830s.
The basics
Some history-focused French Quarter tours stop in front of the house and include a brief amount of commentary. To see the interior, including the home’s art collection, you'll need to book a docent-led tour. Tours center the narratives of the enslaved people who were fundamental in keeping the house in working order over the years. Note that visitors aren't allowed to wander the home's interiors independently.
Things to know before you go
While you can take photos inside the historic home, video and audio recording is prohibited. Large bags, umbrellas, and food and drinks aren't allowed inside, but there is a coat check where you can deposit items during your tour. Heavily discounted combo tickets are available to people wishing to visit both the Hermann-Grima and Gallier Houses.
How to get there
Hermann-Grima House is in the French Quarter. There’s a public parking lot a couple of blocks away, next to the French Market, but many visitors walk there or take public transportation. If you're coming from other parts of the city, the St. Charles Streetcar and the Canal Streetcar are both good ways to go.
When to get there
The house is open every day except Tuesdays and select public holidays. It closes early on the Thursday before Mardi Gras and remains closed until the Thursday after Mardi Gras. Tours take place every hour, on the hour (except for at noon) when the museum is open. Cooking demonstrations take place on Thursdays between October and May.
Gallier House
Many people visit Hermann-Grima House in tandem with nearby Gallier House, both of which are managed by The Woman's Exchange. Gallier House, which finished construction in 1860, is notable for features that were considered novel at the time, including skylights and indoor plumbing with hot water. The historic house also hosts regular history lectures and has a shop with special exhibits that are free for all to visit.
