Hobart Runnymede
61 Bay Road, New Town, Hobart, Tasmania, 7008
Just outside Hobart, Tasmania, Runnymede provides a window into life on the island in the 1840s. This National Trust-run house contains old sailing ephemera, maritime artifacts, period furniture, and historic artwork.
The basics
Built in the middle of the 19th century, this historic house was originally built for one of the earliest lawyers to live in Tasmania before being purchased by Captain Charles Bayley, who named the home for his favorite ship. You can experience it by taking a guided tour of the historic Captain’s House or opt for a tour of the beautiful gardens that surround it.
Things to know before you go
Runnymede is a must-visit for anyone interested in Tasmania's history.
While tour reservations are not required, they are advised, as space is limited.
National Trust members and children aged 6 and under can visit Runnymede free of charge.
How to get there
Runnymede is situated north of central Hobart, about a 10-minute drive away. If you have a car, head up National Highway 1 until you reach Bay Ride and turn right. Alternatively, take Bus 560 to stop 18, a 5-minute walk from Runnymede, or Bus 501, 503, 541, or 562 to New Town, a 10-minute walk away.
When to get there
Runnymede is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from September through June, except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, and Good Friday. Captain’s house tours start right on the hour, but arriving a few minutes before your tour starts is a good idea to ensure you have time to get situated.
The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens
If you enjoyed the garden at Runnymede, you'll adore the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, a 5-minute drive from the historic home. Here, you'll find a wide assortment of gardens, including a traditional herb garden, a Japanese garden, and even a Sub-Antarctic Plant House. There's also an onsite restaurant where food is prepared from the on-site Tasmanian Community Food Garden.
